Chapter 1
Officer Frank Horton sat behind the wheel of his patrol car, looking up at the billboard in Chronos Square. "No way, Bruce. No way."
His partner Bruce Warburton leaned over. "Look, I'm not saying Paragon is as powerful as Captain Alpha. I'm just saying he's a better superhero."
"Absolutely not true."
Frank continued to stare at the billboard across the street, where men in white overalls worked to scrape off the last piece of a huge poster of Captain Alpha. The poster had been there for years as part of a public relations campaign, and it read "Captain Alpha is Protecting Eros City and You!" The smiling and handsome face of Captain Alpha was the last to come off.
Almost no one else in Chronos Square seemed to be paying attention to the billboard, all focused on walking through the dozens of shops in the city square. The billboard was just one of many, along with flashing neon signs, and huge screens showing advertisements non-stop. Over the last few months, a lot of the Captain Alpha billboards had been taken down all over the city, and Frank knew what would be taking this one's place.
Frank shook his head. "I can't believe you of all people would say that, Bruce. You've seen Captain Alpha in action. He saved your ass twice."
Bruce held up his hands as if in defeat. "Hey, again, it's not about power. Captain Alpha can make force fields that can crush a car or bounce off bullets. But as far as being a superhero, Captain Alpha sucked. Even when he saved my ass, he yelled at me for gettin' in his way. And remember the time Vanessa Locket said--"
Frank cut him off by jabbing a finger at him. "Hey, those charges were dropped."
"Because she refused to testify against him. Probably because she was scared. That's not the same as saying it didn't happen. But my point is that Captain Alpha was an asshole, end of story. This Paragon's a really good guy. Captain Alpha punched a guy just for trying to take his picture. Paragon posed for a selfie with me."
Frank leaned back in his seat as the billboard workers began putting up a new sheet of paper. "Big deal. I'd rather have a guy who can save the world than take selfies."
"Why can't he do both? Paragon stopped the Fateful Five, Aphrodisia, and that guy with the face tattoo."
"Yeah, with help from Heavenly Hawk, the Night Watchman, and Alley Cat. And Alley Cat shows what kind of guy Paragon is. Any guy who would work with that cat-lady can't be all right."
"Okay, yeah, Alley Cat used to be a supervillain. But Alley Cat's reformed, on probation." Bruce leaned closer. "And that's another thing. Even Heavenly Hawk has moved on. She obviously prefers Paragon, and she knows Captain Alpha better than anyone."
Frank made a face. "Ugh, don't get me started. That bitch should've at least waited for Captain Alpha to wake up before she started fucking some new guy."
"Not fair. You know they were broken up before she started dating Paragon."
Frank snorted as the billboard workers began plastering a huge poster of Paragon onto the billboard.
"Yeah, so she says. I'd like to hear that from Captain Alpha himself."
Bruce settled back and reached for his coffee on the dashboard. "Well, until he shows up again, that ain't gonna happen. He's been gone from the hospital for a week. What if he never comes back? You gonna keep carrying the torch for Captain Alpha forever?"
"Maybe. Or maybe Captain Alpha will come back and kick Paragon's ass."
"Whatever. They always fight each other. Remember when the Bloodhound and Honey Badger got into it? Yeah, Captain Alpha versus Paragon. I'd pay money to see that."
A loud boom shook the whole police car, spilling coffee all over Bruce. As Bruce yelled and patted at the scalding liquid, Frank leaned out of the driver's window of the patrol car.
His breath caught in his throat as he looked up at a powerful chest clad in blue, leading up to a square-jawed and handsome face. A man in a bodysuit stood in the road next to the car, and the asphalt at his feet had cracks on it like a wrecking ball dropped onto it. His cape fluttered in the cool breeze.
Frank stared up into blue eyes glaring at him from behind a domino mask. He could barely speak before he blurted, "Captain Alpha?"
Captain Alpha nodded. "I heard your conversation. Thank you for defending me. But your friend needs to learn some manners."
He reached out a hand.
Bruce gurgled as his throat suddenly shrank like something had clamped around it. Then he went flying through the front windshield, crashed into a brick wall, and slid down to the ground.
Frank's eyes widened. "H-hey, Captain, you don't have to--"
"Yes, I do." Captain Alpha clenched his gloved fists as he looked up at the billboard. "The fact that people are even suggesting that this Paragon is better than me tells me everything I need to know. It seems that Eros City has forgotten who I am and everything I've done for them. It's time they were given a reminder."
Captain Alpha reached out his hands towards the police car.
Frank yelled as the car groaned for a moment, and began rising up into the air. The metal crackled as the patrol car went higher and higher, gradually turning until it faced the billboard. The men working on putting up a poster of Paragon yelled and stumbled back as the car loomed in front of them.
The car hurtled forward.
Officer Frank Horton screamed as the car slammed into the billboard and exploded in a ball of flame.
