When Matthew Mason reported to his job as a guard at the maximum security wing of the Romita Federal Correctional Complex, he knew it would be for the last time. As he sat in the car in the parking lot, he took deep breaths before pulling out his cell phone.

He brought up an app on his phone, disguised with an icon to make it look like Facebook. When he entered a special code, the phone turned black with a spinning wheel for a moment. Then the Monolith appeared on the screen.

He had never seen anything more of the Monolith than a domed gray helmet with two glowing slits for eyes. He didn't know much about the Monolith but he knew what he needed to know.

"Report," the Monolith said in a deep and booming voice.

Mason looked into the screen at the Monolith. "I'm ready."

The Monolith nodded. "Very well. Do you understand the importance of your mission?"

Mason nodded. "Yes, the Night Watchman must return. This is the way to draw him out."

"And do you understand your role?"

"Yes. I'll probably die."

"Good. Proceed."

The Monolith vanished from the screen, and Matthew hung up his phone.

I'm taking a break from the Venus Online series to start a new one, currently titled Super Babes. It's a LitRPG adventure about a regular guy who gets superpowers.

All Ryan Walker wanted was to be a hero, and he gets his chance when the three heroes who protect Eros City are taken down. Now, thanks to a high-tech implant that uses RPG mechanics to unlock hidden powers, Ryan's become a real-life superhero. He's going to have to face the powerful supervillains that have taken over his city, but he'll have some sexy superheroines to help him along the way.

What Exactly is LitRPG?

So far, all my novels have been LitRPG novels, and some people who aren't familiar with the genre have asked, "What is LitRPG?"

LitRPG is short for "Literary Role Playing Game." It's a literary genre combining the elements of role playing games like EverQuest and World of Warcraft with science-fiction or fantasy novels. In a litRPG, games or game-like challenges form an essential part of the story and usually visible RPG statistics (for example strength, intelligence, damage) are a big part of the world. At least some of the characters in a LitRPG novel (especially the main characters) may understand that they're playing a game or are in a game-like world.

A good example is Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. That book is a straight fantasy novel. However, if you wrote a book about people creating avatars and interacting in a Lord of the Rings MMORPG, that would be a LitRPG novel.

Most LitRPG novels are based on a fantasy universe, which I thought was a little too limiting. I personally am a huge fan of science fiction universes over fantasy, so that's why I created Venus Online.
